This past weekend Stu had a conference in Bonn, Germany, so Abigail and I decided to join him for a quick trip. We took the train up/ over. I have actually been to Bonn before, but it has been 10 years and most of my previous trip to the region was split between time on a soccer pitch and riding in a bus, with only minimal sight-seeing and a short float down the Rhine River. Truth be told, I don't know that actually spent any time in Bonn, so it was nice to see it really for the first time!
We had lovely weather the whole weekend. Our hotel was directly on the Rhine, and we had a nice view of some hills in the distance. We did a little bit of sightseeing. I probably didn't see too much more on this trip than I did ten years ago. Toddlers aren't overly interested in touring Beethoven's childhood home. We did a lot of strolling and there was a huge playground by our hotel, so we spent quite a bit of time there every day. I'm ok with that. I really wasn't that interested in touring Beethoven's childhood home either...
Trying to take pictures of castles on an ICE train isn't easy.
Abbey was so good on the train. She became best friends with the sweet woman in the seat in front of us. I think she was pretty bored by the end of the trip, though.
The wonderful Spielplatz!
A room with a view
Our hotel was great, but these elevators were the bane of my existence. It was so difficult to open the doors with a stroller.
We ate at a Japanese restaurant on Saturday. Abbey practiced eating with chopsticks.
The craziest thing happened while we were at this restaurant. I looked over at a family by us with 3 kids, one of whom was around 7 months. I turned back to Stu and said, "Are they doing what I think they are doing?" and his response was, "Yep." The parents were giving the 7 month old beer. Full drinks of beer. And not just once... several times. And they thought it was hilarious. We had no idea what to do. They finally stopped doing it. This is such a weird country sometimes. Although I'm sure it happens in the States frequently enough.
Can you read my lips... "I'm not in this picture, am I?"
Abbey Road. Funny, no?
Similar to the airlines, an 8 minute delay when taking the train can mean that you miss your connection and have to take later trains... which happens to us more often than not. Oh well, home at last.
